Pi-Pop, a French startup, is revolutionizing the world of transportation with their new electric bicycle. Instead of using traditional lithium batteries, this innovative bike is equipped with supercapacitors, making it a highly eco-friendly choice. Pi-Pop’s main objective is to promote “green transportation” and contribute to a sustainable future.

A supercapacitor is a specific kind of capacitor that has the remarkable ability to store significantly larger amounts of energy compared to regular capacitors. In fact, they can typically store anywhere from 10 to 100 times more energy. Additionally, supercapacitors possess the capability to charge at an exceptionally rapid rate.

This technology is not entirely new, but it has been adopted across various fields to enhance performance. Some areas where it is being used include photovoltaic systems, digital cameras, electric vehicles, and hybrid electric vehicles.

Pi-Pop’s electric bike harnesses the energy storage and discharge capabilities of supercapacitors.

Electric bicycles do not use lithium batteries

Pi-Pop’s technology differs from traditional electric bicycles in that it prioritizes energy regeneration. Instead of relying solely on lithium batteries for power, Pi-Pop harnesses the energy generated when the rider pedals, goes downhill, or brakes to recharge itself.

Supercapacitors utilize readily available and recyclable materials such as aluminum, carbon, cellulose, and polymers. By employing these materials, supercapacitors have a prolonged lifespan and contribute substantially to waste reduction when compared to lithium batteries.

Pi-Pop outfits its electric vehicles with an advanced energy storage system utilizing supercapacitors that possess an impressive lifespan of approximately 10 to 15 years. This lifespan significantly surpasses that of lithium batteries, which typically endure for only about 5 to 6 years. Notably, these supercapacitors are environmentally sustainable and entirely recyclable.

The vehicle is designed with a 250W motor that offers continuous electric assistance, enabling the driver to achieve speeds of up to 25 km/h.

The electric bike flaunts an elegant white design and has a weight of approximately 21.7 kg, catering to the needs of both men and women. This electric car model, which does not use lithium batteries, is anticipated to be priced at around 2,610 USD.
